The principle advantages to cnc (computer numerically controlled) machinery are: saved labor costs, reduced injuries, and increased production speed.
These benefits can quickly offset the initial cost of a retrofit, and continue to save you money for years. The most popular retrofits are machines that operate using two or three axes, such as coordinate drive (x/y) shape cutting machines and milling machines. The same electronics and motors can also be used to automate routing, engraving, and other processes that cut or etch designs.
Examples of typical retrofits are cutting tables equipped with optically driven (electric eye) guidance, or older cnc tables with obsolete or worn out electronics. The same is true for manual milling machines, or units with worn out cnc equipment. Metal lathes are also good candidates for cnc retrofitting.
Four things must be taken into account in selecting your retrofit kit. They are:
The weight of the carriage or
gantry that must be powered.
The bolt pattern and shaft size
of your existing motors.
The amount & type of reduction
used for your existing motors.
The type of drive train used on
your machine (rack & pinion,
lead screws, ball screws, etc.).
